Don’t you love a hearty meal that’s easy to make? Crockpot Cubed Steaks is just that! Cooked in a slow cooker means it is oh so tender, & flavorfully good.
Crockpot Cubed Steaks
Cubed Steak is one of those comfort foods my mom made when I was little. I decided to try making it in the crockpot and it came out just right! Well of course it did, crockpots are amazing, am I right?
Comfort food is pretty much on the menu at my house at least once a week. When I say comfort food, I mean something that’s delicious, warms you from the inside and leaves you with a warm “comforted” feeling.
And when I can combine a comforting dish along with preparation in a slow cooker, that’s a winner winner! I tend to use my slow cooker at least twice a week, sometimes more depending on my schedule.
What is Cube Steak?
Cube steak is a cut of beef, usually, top round or top sirloin, tenderized and flattened by pounding with a meat tenderizer, or by using an electric tenderizer. The name refers to the shape of the indentations left by that process.
Is it called Cube Steak or Cubed Steak?
Both, it is the same thing just a slight variation in spelling.
Is Cube Steak the same as ground beef?
A different cut of beef. Cube Steak needs to be tenderized.
What can you make with Cube Steak?
- Chicken Fried Steak
- Swiss Steak
- Cubed Steak with Gravy
This brings me right back to this recipe for Crockpot Cubed Steaks. You’ll find this recipe not only easy but budget-friendly for feeding a bigger family. I picked up 2 packages of Cubed Steak, roughly 1.75 pounds total for $9 at Aldi.
There are 2 different ways to prepare this easy recipe. Let me share with you my preferred version first. This is simply because I know my family and what they will and won’t eat (yes, my young kids are still on the fussy side).
Version #1: Prepare in Crockpot meat and sauce only.
I like to prepare this without freezing, why…I do not have a second freezer and no space for extra freezer items. Yup, it is that simple. I can get this going in the crockpot in 5 minutes, so really no time at all.
Version #2: Prep ahead of time and freeze.
This version is what you may be expecting to read about if you are finding this recipe via our 20 Meals in 2 Hours post. Short story: you prep ahead of time, freeze, and pop into your slow cooker whenever you’d like to prepare this particular meal.
Freezer meals are an excellent way to get a handle on busy mealtimes. There’s a reason the 40 Meals in 4 Hours post has been popular since 2012. Please be sure to scroll down, you’ll find links to all of our freezer meal sets listed below.
The original post for this recipe was from a previous contributor. She added baby carrots right into the freezer bag and cooked them right along with the cubed steak in the crockpot. Doing it this way does save the additional step of cooking the carrots.
Either way you choose to prepare Crockpot Cubed Steaks you’ll enjoy the flavors in this comforting dish. If you don’t have a large number of people to feed you’ll find yourself with leftovers, never a bad thing.
Notes for making Crockpot Cubed Steaks:
- This recipe makes a good amount of sauce, perfect for serving over mashed potatoes.
- Use Cream of Whatever soup you desire, I prefer Cream of Celery.
- Low and slow is the way to prepare in the crockpot, don’t rush the cooking time.

This sounds delicious. Definitely comfort food! Thanks for sharing on Foodie Friends Friday!
Lara
If you are freezing this, do you still follow the directions as-is and put in the bag?
Heather
Sorry – should have put this in the recipe 😉 No do not add the sour cream – add that the day of – the rest yes in the bag and freeze! It’s really delish!
tricia
if I already have a lb of beef in the freezer, can I just add the remaining ingredients to the bag then put it in crockpot when I am ready to make?
Heather
Tricia – absolutely – is it already in cubes? I did that with a couple of my freezer meals (I buy meat on sale and stick it in the freezer ;))
Heather
Forgot to say – just don’t thaw out the meat at all! Mix the other ingredients up then take out the meat, and quickly pour them in and pop it right back in the freezer!
David
This was absolutely delicious! I might add soe potatoes next time. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Ashley
When you say cubed steak, is that what it is actually called? Or can you use any steak and just cube it.
Bevin
That is actually what it is called. You can do a search for it to see what it looks like uncooked if that helps!
Jenny
This was really good. The best out of the 3 that we’ve tried so far. I didn’t use any sour cream though, and it was delish without it. We also used stew beef as opposed to cubed beef … I’d say that’s what happens when you send the hubby to the store with the list, but I was there too, and I honestly didn’t even think “cubed beef” until we got home with all the groceries. The 20 meals in 2 hours is a great idea, and so far, this is our fave.
Heather
I LOVED this meal too 😉 And yes – I cheated and used stew beef lol (it’s easier lol I don’t have to cut meat). So glad you liked it
Chris
I bought a package of six cube steaks, planning on freezing half since I cook for one. This blog inspired me to make the gravy and divide it in two. Half went into my small crockpot, and half into a quart freezer bag for another time. Thanks for the idea.
Barbara Higgins
Stir in sour cream, put cube steak back in….for how long?
Lori
Hi Barbara, You are just returning the cubed steaks into the sauce. No need to cook any additional time.
