Caramel Crumb Apple Pie is simply delicious! All the flavors of autumn in one yummy dessert! You won’t regret making this pie from scratch!
Pie, who doesn’t love it? Well, I guess there’s some out there, but definitely not me. Fruit pies are great in my opinion, and at the top of my list is apple. This Caramel Crumb Apple Pie is one that I’ve tweaked through the years to combine some of my favorite elements; apples, crumb topping and caramel, definite winners.
Making pie crusts from scratch is not one of my favorite things to do, I CAN do it, I just really don’t enjoy it. So use whatever type of bottom crust you’d prefer, whether it be from scratch, from a box, pre formed, it doesn’t matter.
When I do make crust I rely on the old standard from www.betterhomesandgardens.com. So, go load up on some apples, get peeling and be prepared to enjoy some delicious pie.
Caramel Crumb Apple Pie
Filling:
6 cups sliced tart apples (roughly 6 medium apples)
4 t lemon juice
3 T caramel ice cream topping
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t nutmeg
Crumb Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup oatmeal
2 T brown sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
1/4 cup cold butter
Preheat oven to 375. Start by lining a 9″ pie plate with pastry of choice. In a large bowl combine apples, lemon juice, caramel, sugar, flour, cinnamon & nutmeg. After thoroughly combining, spoon into pastry lined pan. For topping: combine flour, sugars, oatmeal, & cinnamon into bowl, cut in butter using pasty blender or 2 knives, until mixture is coarse & crumbly. Spoon over pie filling. Use narrow strips of aluminum foil to cover edges of crust. Bake for 25 minutes, remove aluminum foil strips and continue baking for an additional 25 minutes or until the apples are tender. Cool on a wire rack. After pie is cooled take additional 2 T caramel ice cream topping and drizzle over crumb topping with a fork. Serves 8.
Now don’t forget the vanilla ice cream or even a dollop of whipped cream! Yum!
