This is Wookie, she’s our family pet. In today’s post I’m going to tell you the tale of “The Fleece Dog Toy” and what may or may not have happened to this toy. It all begins this time last year. My 8 yr old daughter made a fleece dog toy as part of a Girl Scouts project. They made them for shelter dogs and also took one home if they had a family dog. Well, my youngest daughter was not too thrilled when a red and black fleece dog toy was presented to Wookie. This is the child who likes all things pink, frilly, sequined and glitzy. She also likes to make sure Wookie has all things girly too!

Scoot ahead 6-7 months and we’ve misplaced this red and black fleece dog toy countless times. How? I do not know. But then we moved and oddly enough the toy which my youngest wasn’t overly thrilled about never reappeared. Now we may never know if it was intentionally misplaced once and for all or if like many items, got lost in the move. All we know is that the dog was down a toy.

This holiday season I’m making a concentrated effort to help my kids think about intentional gifts for friends and family. Not just buying a gift to buy a gift. I want them to think about the person, what their true likes are and figure out what to buy based on that. We normally purchase our Wookie something small but instead this year we made her a new fleece dog toy that was girly enough to please everyone.

Let me tell you how simple a DIY Fleece Dog Toy is to make! Trust me, it is easy and fun to let the kids help with. I used remnant pieces of fleece that were really affordable from my local craft store. If you have leftover fleece from other projects this is a wonderful way to use up small pieces. Wookie is a small dog, the strips I cut were 2″ x 16″. If you have a larger dog you may want to increase the size of the strips to make a beefier toy.

  • Cut 3 strips that are 2″ x 16″.
  • Lay strips on flat surface & start to braid.
  • Leave 3″ strips at each end to tie into a knot to secure braid.

I like to double knot the knotted strips at the ends to make sure the braid is nice and secure. These are machine washable, I made 2 so that one was clean while the other was being laundered.

Next we decided to give Wookie a delicious treat along with her toys. Wookie is a valued member of our family, but I’m busy and the holidays are an extra busy time for me so stopping into a specialty store for pet food and supplies isn’t on my to-do list.

My local Kroger store has a great selection of our pet’s favorite food and treats. How convenient to just load trusted items into my shopping cart and save a trip elsewhere! Into my cart went Purina Beneful Incredibites dog food. Did you know that meat is the #1 ingredient and there’s no sugar added? Wookie also loves Beggin’ Strips (what dog doesn’t) and Busy dog treats.

After completing the fleece dog toys we simply wrapped them up with Busy dog treats! Busy dog treats are long lasting chews that will keep them busy during the holiday season. Ideal for Christmas morning!

Fleece dog toys would make a fun gift for the kids to make for their grandparents dogs too! Just be sure to include some tasty treats such as Beggin’ Strips which both smell and taste like bacon because they are made with bacon. As you can see our Wookie is very happy with her girlier fleece dog toys and my daughter is happy too. For more inspiration, please visit the Social Hub by clicking HERE!

We make a similar toy for our dog and she loves them- it can be hard to find tough toys for small dogs, so hand making them is a great solution. #client

Wookie is so cute! And this is a great idea. Dog toys are not cheap and our dog tends to tire of them after a while. This way we can make him a new one every time.

What a fun idea for our furbabies!! My baby destroys the expensive dog toys in pet stores and it just kills me to waste money like that! I will have to give this a try 🙂

These might be fun to make with my daughter’s Girl Scout troop as a service project.
