Summer time is the time to Get Outside and Play! Time to reclaim the back yard!
I’m preaching to the choir here, but sometimes I have just felt it’s HARD to get us outside to play. I’m busy you guys! When I was growing up I was NEVER indoors (NEVER NEVER NEVER). We rocked the neighborhood with roller skates (oh yes I did). I was on my bike EVERYWHERE! I never thought of it as exercise – just was doing what I was doing. With my kids? Yes they will go out, but somehow it’s different? I can’t be the only one. So let’s talk about it – let’s come out with some easy ideas to get outside! I know I’m not the only one because 70% of moms played outside when they were kids, 31% of their kids play outside today. Let’s see if we can get that changed!
2 of my boys are in swimming – they love it! It’s awesome exercise and it’s actually quite fun BUT it is a team sport and isn’t giving them all the play time that they need. Plus I have 1 more that’s too young for swim team, so I have to keep being creative. I want them ALL to have healthy habits. That includes yes some scheduled “sports time” but in my mind it also includes getting up from the couch – putting the electronics down, playing and fueling up with an awesome snack. So yes, Get Outside Boys! (or girls – in my house it’s boys!)
While we are talking about healthy habits – let’s talk about my kids go to snack…CLIF Kid Zbar®. It really is our number one go to. They love it (and you guys my “baby” who is 6 is so uber fussy that if he likes it? and it’s got some nutrition? I buy it…and a lot of it). CLIF Kid Zbar® are just yummy. I struggle keeping them stocked in my house because they gobble them up. and I’m totally ok with that! CLIF Kid Zbar® are non GMO (I’m winning already), are an appropriate size for kids – with the right amount of nutrition for kids, and they are made with organic ingredients.
WAIT the best part is? They fit into my purse. Or the box can go out back with us! I’m doing the mom win dance all around. My older 2 also get the fact that they are a good snack and know to just go get one!
Ok let’s get to some tips. Here’s what we’ve done this summer. My husband built us a ping pong table. Yes he did! So easy to do. You don’t HAVE to make that but find something that everyone in your family will enjoy doing. I know that we aren’t burning 500 calories by playing ping pong – but we are ALL outside together. And isn’t showing your kids the best way? So I’m getting them up and out of the house, my husband and I are getting out of the house, and even the dog is getting up and out of the house. Chasing the ball (um I’m horrible at ping pong) around the yard starts us moving.
After we are done getting beat by daddy at ping pong (or our dog ate the ball…again) we move on. We’ve played Tag, Red Light Green Light, Kick the can, and Mother May I (my fav). We get a bit more movement out of those games and guess what…no equipment needed (except for a CLIF Kid Zbar® for a snack!). We might wind down with some bubbles, or just taking the dog for a walk after the heat of the day has passed (mom doesn’t do super hot). Whatever we do we are OUTSIDE we are having FUN and we are LOVING every minute of it.
I feel great about our outside play. I’m teaching my boys that you don’t have to do push ups every night, but just get outside and have a great time! It’s the fun part of being a kid!
I’m always up for suggestions. What are you guys doing outside? Want some more ideas? Be sure to check out the CLIF Kid video (it’s really fun). CLICK HERE to go and watch and be inspired!
