I consider myself one of Santa’s Elves. I start counting down to Christmas in August (that’s no joke), I decorate my house before Thanksgiving (for real), and I start shopping as soon as I can (usually September).
One of the things that I love to do is our Advent Calendar. Yes, it helps count down the days until Christmas, but we do a bit more. We plan out our whole month of December with our Advent Calendar (ours is a house with doors and ornaments inside every day). For every day in December we do something Christmassy. Each day they open a door and there is a Christmas Activity in there for our family to do that day (ok and a piece of candy)! It’s great fun for my boys and I think it’s one of those traditions that they will remember forever. I love it!
You don’t need to run out and buy a big calender/house or anything (I mean that’s what December 26 is for – buying next years decorations). If you don’t already have a calendar make envelopes with the dates on or fold pieces of paper and write the dates on them. Your kids can open an envelope every day with the days activities on it – and they would be just as excited! You don’t need anything special equipment, just some paper and a plan.
Here is a list of some of the things my family does for our Christmas Bucket List – I try to do it cheaply (Christmas has enough expenses) and some of these will be repeated.
- Make Christmas Cookies
- Go to the Christmas Parade
- Drink Hot Cocoa
- Have a Christmas Coloring Contest
- Have a Christmas Singing Contest (yes we do!)
- Watch a Christmas Movie
- Drive and look at Christmas Lights
- Open a stocking present*
- Go Christmas Caroling (in the neighborhood or at a friends)
- Play with the Christmas Train (around one of our trees)
- Go to Grandpa and Grandma’s
- Go to Great Grandma’s Christmas Party
- Family Christmas Shopping day
- Read a Christmas Story
- Make a Christmas Craft
*In my house growing up Stockings were done by mom and dad. We always got to open a few before Christmas (I believe this was my mom’s way of keeping us under control because my excitement level was unbelievable). So I always have plenty of stockings for my kids to open throughout December and then the rest are opened on Christmas morning 🙂
Have fun! And tell me what you put on your list!
