These are the perfect sweet treats for Valentine's Day! Luscious little chocolate cake hearts topped with cream cheese frosting and a variety of sprinkles. Ideal for parties, these bite-sized desserts won't last long.

I hosted a Valentines royal tea party for 17 preschoolers last year and the favorite thing to eat at the party were these pretty little chocolate heart cakes.  I made 24 little heart cakes about the size of a cupcake in my ruffled heart cakes pan.

Cake adapted from One Bowl Chocolate Cake III Frosting adapted from Cream Cheese Frosting II

Ingredients

    For the Cake
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • unsweetened cocoa for coating pan
  • For the Frosting
  • 2 8 ounce packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (coud be a bit more or less depending on consistency/taste desired)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • festive sprinkles

Instructions

    For the Cake
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees℉
  2. Grease and coat with cocoa chose pans or use cupcake liners if you are doing cupcakes
  3. Stir together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt
  4. Add the eggs, milk, sour cream, oil and vanilla, mix for 2 minutes on medium speed of mixer
  5. Stir in the boiling water last
  6. Pour evenly into the pans about 3/4 full per heart
  7. Bake 15 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool
  9. Cool completely before frosting
  10. For the Frosting
  11. Cream together the cream cheese and butter until creamy
  12. Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners' sugar
  13. Decorate with various tips and sugar sprinkles
  14. Store in refrigerator
